What is ISPM-15?
ISPM-15 (International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15) is an international standard that requires wood packaging materials to be treated to prevent the spread of invasive insects and plant diseases.

Heat Treatment Guide
Heat Treatment vs Chemical Treatment
Heat treatment is the environmentally preferred method over methyl bromide fumigation. No chemicals are applied - only heat. This eliminates chemical residue concerns for food and pharmaceutical applications. Heat treatment is accepted worldwide while methyl bromide faces increasing restrictions.
The Science Behind Heat Treatment
ISPM-15 requires wood core temperature to reach 56°C (133°F) for 30 continuous minutes. This temperature eliminates all life stages of invasive insects and pathogens. Our kilns are equipped with temperature probes that verify and document core temperatures throughout the process.
Understanding the IPPC Mark
The IPPC stamp includes the treatment symbol (HT for heat treatment), country code (US), producer number, and registration. This mark must be visible on at least two opposite sides of the pallet. Missing or illegible stamps may result in shipment rejection at customs.
What Materials Require Treatment
ISPM-15 applies to solid wood packaging thicker than 6mm. This includes pallets, crates, dunnage, and skids. Plywood, particle board, and engineered wood are exempt as manufacturing processes already eliminate pests. Keep treated and untreated wood separated.
Re-Treatment Requirements
Pallets require re-treatment after repair if more than one-third of components are replaced. The original stamp is removed and a new stamp applied post-treatment. Contaminated or infested pallets must be re-treated regardless of repair extent. Document all repairs and treatments.
Heat Treatment Costs Explained
Treatment costs typically range from $2-4 per pallet depending on volume and timing. Rush service incurs additional fees. Volume discounts available for large quantities. Consider purchasing pre-treated pallets for regular export needs to save time and handling costs.
Treatment Timing and Planning
Standard turnaround is 24-48 hours. Same-day service available for urgent shipments with advance notice. Large loads may require scheduling to ensure kiln capacity. Plan treatment 3-5 days before shipping for international orders to allow for documentation.
Documentation and Compliance
We provide certificates of treatment with each batch documenting temperatures, times, and pallet counts. Keep records for at least 2 years per USDA requirements. Some countries require additional documentation beyond ISPM-15 - we can advise on specific requirements.
